WHICH DIRECTION SHOULD YOU TURN YOUR BLINDS
Many homeowners often ask us whether you should turn your blinds up or down. Truth is that both directions can work depending on their location. However it all comes down to what you are trying to control, light or privacy. As tight as modern blinds close, there will always be some gapping between slats.
FOR PRIVACY
Adjusting your blinds with the slats facing down provides the maximum privacy when the windows are located above ground level. However the opposite is true when the windows are at ground level. Within close range, some limited view through blinds is possible. Closing the blinds in the upward direction will limit any intrusive eyes to the ceiling instead of the lower areas of the home.
TO HELP WITH SUMMER HEAT
With summer sunshine comes harsh sunlight and uncomfortable temperatures. To help with this keep your blinds fully closed during the summer months. This will help keep the sun’s rays from beating into your room and radiating heat off of the surfaces it shines on. Keeping out the harsh sunlight and UV rays will help prevent fading of furnishing, flooring and paint. If you want to allow some sunlight in, turn your blinds so the slats are facing upward. This will allow some light in while blocking most of the harsh uv rays and radiating much of the heat back outdoors.
TO HELP WITH WINTER COLD
When it comes to keeping the cool air out the same rules apply. Opening your blinds during winter months when it is sunny will allow the sunlight to warm up the space. However, on overcast days, to add insulation and keep cool air from seeping in, close your blinds to add extra insulation. Either direction works well in this situation.
FOR LIGHT CONTROL
The brightest light and UV rays come in a downward angle directly from the sun. If your goal is controlling light but not closing your blinds completely, then the best option is to turn the slats up. Completely closing blinds in the upward position is also the preferred direction for the maximum room darkening effect.
FOR THE MOST AESTHETICALLY PLEASING LOOK?
A. Up
B. Down
C. Up or Down
The clear answer to this question is C. Throughout our decades of working with customers, we have found that everyone has a personal preference on this one. The most popular position we have found is tilted slightly upward. This position gives privacy during the daylight hours, harsh light and heat control, while also maintaining your view.
