Adjusting Shutters to Fit your Needs

WHAT’S THE IDEAL LOUVER DIRECTION FOR YOUR SHUTTERS?

Shutters not only enhance your home’s aesthetic appeal but also provide practical benefits. Adjusting the shutter louvers allows you to manage sunlight, UV protection, and privacy. Here are some guidelines to optimize these aspects:

WHICH WAY TO TILT YOUR LOUVERS?

Many wonder whether to tilt shutters up or down. The answer depends on your specific needs. Consider whether you prioritize light or privacy.  While most shutters have a cutout for the tilt bar to fit in when they are angled up, you still may choose to adjust them at different times of the day.

FOR PRIVACY:

Facing the louvers downward maximizes privacy for upper-level windows, while for ground-level windows, upward-facing slats limit visibility into the lower areas.

TO COMBAT SUMMER HEAT:

During sunny months, fully close shutters to prevent harsh sunlight and heat from penetrating indoors. To allow some light while blocking UV rays and to help keep the heat from radiating off the surfaces it shines on, angle the louvers upward.

TO COMBAT WINTER COLD:

Open shutters on sunny winter days to utilize sunlight for warmth. Angling the louvers down with provide the most intense sunlight without compromising privacy.  Conversely, on overcast days, close shutters to provide additional insulation.

FOR LIGHT CONTROL:

To manage light without fully closing shutters, tilt the louvers upward to deflect sunlight. The brightest light and UV rays come in a downward angle from the sun.  So angling the louvers upward helps control this light the best. Completely closing shutters upward provides maximum room darkening.

FOR AESTHETICS:

Preference varies, but a slight upward tilt is often favored for privacy, light control, and maintaining a view.
